I've been doing a lot of reflection lately and I'm sure you have too. We're coming up on the end of this crazy unexpected year and it's the perfect time to reflect on how we've grown over the year. You can always tell when people are experience growth because there's this glow around them. They seem brighter, happier, more confident.
A good friend of mine, Amanda Rose, has experienced a lot of growth. And I'm incredibly proud of her because we go back. We go way back. I knew her when she was at a different point in her career when she was scared and afraid to trust. And now she's different! She's...you know, grown.
So to kick off this season of reflection, goal making, and new beginnings, Amanda and I are going to talk about the growth that she's experienced and how you can experience that growth too.

Okay, so just moving on with today's topic, it's called The Growth Glow. You know that glow around your friends when they've just gone through it. They've gone through it unapologetically. You know that they're coming into their own, they're more confident and they're less just affected by the world. Maybe they feel a little bit more grounded to you, and just more in alignment maybe with themselves. You know that growth glow, and that is exactly what Amanda Rose, our guest today, that's what I've experienced with her. I see it around her.
It's so apparent because she has gone through a really incredible year of growth, and I'm not a stranger to that, especially if you listen to this podcast. You know all of my stories, so if we just rewind 10 years ago to my own story, I feel like it's unrecognizable. I lived for the pleasure of others. I remember trying my best to not raise a fuss. I wanted to be pleasant. I wanted to be liked. I wanted my eyes to say, "I'm fun", my posture to say, "I don't care about myself. I just care about you. It's cool. Don't worry about it."
I wanted my smile to say, "I don't cause trouble. I'm easy to love. Just love me. I don't cause any trouble." So, I performed the I Don't Know, What Do You Think? show even nights a week. I remember feeling that way. And admittedly, I used to play dumb. I wanted to be considered friendly. I wanted to make sure people didn't think I was threatening in anyway. I wanted to be seen as easygoing, cute, happy, cheerful plus there were times where I felt like I was "rewarded" for it because I got people to laugh at something dumb that I said. That was so calculated actually.
Or, it got people's attention. I used to think that acting dumb was the only way a girl like me could survive. I wanted to be liked but most of all, I wanted to be loved so, so badly. So, I thought the only way to do that was to present the easiest version of myself so that a man could fall in love with it easily. It wasn't really me. It was a shell of me. I didn't want to be complicated. I didn't want to cause problems. I didn't want people to leave me, but guess what? The left anyway.
So, that was back in 2009. How the heck did I go from being an Asian version of Kelly Bundy to a serious ... I guess you could say I'm serious ... a serious CEO and the leader of two seven figure businesses? It's not a formula. It's not a program. It's not a book. It is a freaking miracle, and sometimes I look back at old photos of myself and come across old videos on my timeline, and I start crying. I'm like, "Why?" I just feel so sorry for her. You know what I mean?
And, I even say her because it doesn't feel like who I am now. Yes, I worked hard for this. Yes, I had mentors. Yes, I invested in myself, I took risks and I did hard things, but the credit for my transformation has to be from God. It just has to be. It's just too big of a transformation, I think, for me to be able to do through my own human power. That's the only possible answer. I believe God saved me from myself, and He introduced me to the life that was always inside of me, but I just continued to suppress.
My husband had a lot to do with that because he allowed me to feel safe, and he allowed me to try things because he made me feel like if I failed, I would be loved anyway. So, that is the message of grace. And I think that experience, my own life experience, is the reason why I am so empathetic and I see parts of myself in people who are hurting, because I know what's really going on. I think that is why I felt a connection with Amanda, that even though in the beginning, it was rocky and she did frustrate me, she was always willing. She was always willing, she was open to growing and she challenged herself.
Even though maybe conversations with me were hard, she kept coming back and what that did was it thickened our relationship. It made it richer. It made it deeper. And yeah, that's why I could tell you right now, she's one of my best friends in the industry and one of my favorite business coaching clients. Can't wait for you to meet her. Hi, everyone. What's going on. Good morning. I'm in Los Angeles so it is morning for me. You guys, I have a very special guest today on Pretty Rich podcast. You guys in the PMU industry, and maybe even some of the last industry might know who she is. It is Amanda Rose of HYVE Beauty, who I have had the absolute pleasure and honor of getting to know and walk with just in the past 12 months. I think a little bit more than that. So, I'm going to bring her on. We're going to dive deep into the founder and CEO of HYVE Beauty. Here we go.

Wow, that's a lot of my face. I'm just going to back up here.

That's a lot of my face. It's a lot of our faces.
Amanda Rose:
A lot of my face first thing in the morning, and I'm wearing my winter sweater because we have two feet of snow up here in Canada, and it is about I'm going to say around zero degrees Fahrenheit here. It's in the minuses. It's cold.
Sheila Bella:
Oh, wow. Okay, I was complaining. I bust out my puffer jacket when it's 60 degrees in Los Angeles because I don't know ... I love seeing pictures of snow.
Amanda Rose:
You love experiencing the four seasons, but just not hands-on experience.
Sheila Bella:
No, milder. Milder.
Amanda Rose:
Well, we have an amazing masterclass out here in front in HYVE space right now and our instructors came from Toronto, which is also in Canada but it is 20 degrees warmer there so when they left, it was 80 degrees Fahrenheit there, and then they came here. I'm like, "Bring your winter coats. Bring your winter boots. Welcome to Canada's wonderland."
Sheila Bella:
Oh, wow. I still have yet to visit you there.
Amanda Rose:
I know.
Sheila Bella:
This live, this podcast, I've wanted to do it with you for a long time because I've just gotten to know you a deeper level, and it's such an honor, by the way, for you to let me in. You let me in, you know? I just love you so much and this has been a long journey for you-

We have gone down deep, you and I, girlfriend. We have gone down deep.

Yeah. We've fought, we've had uncomfortable conversations.
Amanda Rose:
We have, and what amazing opportunities to create such intimacy in our relationship. I just feel so profoundly connected to you and so appreciative and grateful.
Sheila Bella:
Same. I feel so connected to you, and that's what uncomfortable conversations do and that's what growth does. Speaking of growth, that is the topic for today's podcast, which is what is it? The Growth Glow.
Amanda Rose:
The Growth Glow.
Sheila Bella:
Yeah. I see that in you so much.
Amanda Rose:
You are a big part of that. It's been a year. It's so funny. Today's Friday the 13th. Remember I sent you that meme last night? I'm like, "Let's roll the dice. Let's see what happens." Friday the 13th in 2020, it's an interesting time for sure. But, it's been a year, right? It's actually been since I first signed up for Pretty Rich Bosses and our coaching agreement, that was last March, so it's been almost 18 months that you and I have ... in the formal context of our relationship, but it's been actually since we turned into HYVE Beauty. Remember?
When we were going through the rebrand, that's when I reached out to you. I'm like, "We're rebranding. We want to expand to the US and you're my girl. I want to work with you." My intentions and my thoughts and my goals around that at the time was I want to work with Sheila on strategy, I want to work with her on brand visibility in the United States, and what has come back and what has been built between the two of us, and what has happened for me has been just so much more than that. Just so much.
I want to start crying but it's-
Sheila Bella:
I know. I'm going to start crying, too, because I know all about it.
Amanda Rose:
Yeah, you've been walking with me through all of this and the grace that you've shown me and the grace that you have encouraged and supported me to create for myself is just beyond my dreams.
Sheila Bella:
I'm so grateful for you. Thank you so much for your vulnerability and for sharing that. Gosh, I feel a connection with you that in the beginning I wasn't sure was possible.
Amanda Rose:
Right?
Sheila Bella:
Yeah, being honest. And you probably thought so, too, right?
Amanda Rose:
Right. Well, it's so interesting as we've navigated the last year and a half, and it's so interesting the stories ... And you and I have talked a lot about this. The stories we hold about ourselves and other people without even knowing who they are. I love that you talked a lot about this this week, about specifically in our industry is that we're constantly paying attention and hyper-focusing on everybody else's business.
Sheila Bella:
Yeah. My post yesterday, I saw your-
Amanda Rose:
Girl. That hit me.
Sheila Bella:
We're obsessed.
Amanda Rose:
I'm like, "Yes!" I wanted to slap that all over social media. I'm like, "Read this. Pay attention." It is so true, and I've had a lot of conversations with myself. I'm like, "Stay in your own lane, Amanda. Give your business your energy. Be aware of what's going on but don't worry about what other people are doing." Depending on the days, sometimes easier said than done. We're all human beings.
Sheila Bella:
Seriously.
Amanda Rose:
We're all human beings, and it's really fascinating sometimes when you come across a person and they're like, "So, this is the story I've been told about you." And you're like, "Whoa, I don't feel like that's based in reality but that's my experience." And yeah, again, when we're all getting to know each other on social media, we are seeing one dimension of people in a lot of ways. We're seeing what we want people to see about us, but the real juice and the real magic and the squishiness is what happens off the camera.
It happens in conversation, it happens when we are together, and I don't know ... I am truly so grateful. It's been a hard year. I think it's been a hard year for everybody. There's been a lot of fear. Just like every other business, we're not a huge business. That's the other thing, a lot of people are like, "You guys are huge." I'm like, "There are six and a half of us that run this entire business." March was scary. This whole year was scary.
I was supposed to get on a plane to Pretty Ambitious that morning, and I had so much empathy for the timing around for you in March, it was gutting.
Sheila Bella:
The worst.
Amanda Rose:
It was gutting as somebody who cares and as somebody who was also selfishly so excited to be at that event, and be in community with other women. I was like, "This is going to be the game changer. This is going to be the catalyst for all the healing and all the conversations that need to happen."
And, it's still going to happen. I know that. It might be in a couple ... Who knows? But again, coming out of that experience and that situation was yet another opportunity for me to create more intimacy with you, more intimacy with people involved in those conversations, and it also allowed, I think, a lot of us to stand back and witness how certain people were choosing to show up.
Sheila Bella:
Mm-hmm (affirmative). Yeah, it revealed.
Amanda Rose:
Yes, it really was. There were those of us, especially like you, who stepped in right away and you're like, "Okay, here's how I'm going to be of value." The way that you were able to ... I don't want to say pivot because it was already on brand and in line with you in terms of online course creation and stuff like that, but the timing of it and how approachable you made it and how valuable you made all of your content for people, and at a price point that I felt was very, very generous. And, giving people the possibility that they could pivot themselves, that this wasn't the end of the road, that there was opportunities to create and sustain themselves through this when a lot of people were just freaked out and just thought the end is near.
Amanda Rose:
So, it was definitely people like you that were showing up in social media to give people hope and opportunity. So for me, it's so interesting with the Instagram Lives. Those, I feel, changed everything for me this year.
Yes, they did. In many ways, not just that, but that was a big part of it. Yeah, those Instagram Lives you were doing regularly. I have a question for you, though. You've had a lot of growth this past year, and I feel like in many ways, you were misunderstood by a lot of people in the industry and by me, as well. That's why I was like there's something behind this. There's something behind this. Let me dig deeper. Let me dig deeper. What is it?
Sheila Bella:
In what ways do you feel you've been misunderstood?
Amanda Rose:
Oh, wow. Okay. I feel like there is this narrative behind the curtains. Here's my experience, and I'm trying to also bring in an external experience of me, if I could disembody myself. When I started Microblade Canada in 2017, I am a marketing person. That is what I do sometimes what I feel like is energetic, disruptive marketing, the experience on that on the outside can be that I am aggressive, that I am stepping on toes, that I am being rude and abrasive and all of those things, and here's the thing. Anytime you step into an industry that you are not known in ... The other thing is I was seen as somebody who didn't know what they were talking about simply because I was a new permanent makeup artist, and I never said that I wasn't, but I also had 20 years in business and building brands and marketing.
I was also, I think, at the beginning because I did not feel like I had ... I wanted to earn their credibility and I needed to earn their respect, and my focus was always 100% on our customer base, so I didn't really think at the beginning have an appreciation for also massaging and being gentle with relationships with people in the industry who weren't our customers, if I could say it that way. There was some aggressive conversations back and forth.
But the wonderful thing is now is that I've had an opportunity with most of those people, most of those relationships to heal them, to actually create true friendships now and support systems. So the thing is, the way I feel like I've been misunderstood is that I don't know, maybe how I show up or who I am is. I don't want to say I've been villainized because I'm a human being. I have done some shitty things. I have operated out of scarcity. You have some voice messages from me where I was not at my best, where I was at my low, low, low point.
Sheila Bella:
Oh, we've all had those moments. Guys, who can relate? That's so amazing. We've all been shitty to each other. We have.
Amanda Rose:
Well I mean, when you're scared, you go into this place where you're in your cave and you are just defensive and you are just feeling protective, and I don't even know what the protection is really.
Sheila Bella:
Trying to protect something. Your ego, your ... Also, I feel like as women, we hop into that momma bear mentality really easily and sometimes we misuse it.
Amanda Rose:
Yes, 100%.
Sheila Bella:
We feel like we're protecting something and we just go into Olympic state. We're just like, "No, got to protect the baby," whatever the baby is. The business baby, your ego baby. That's the thing. What does my husband say? He says that nothing is more dangerous than a momma bear.
Amanda Rose:
Until I had my son, I never fully understand the human capacity to harm another person. I'm going to say when I had my child, I was like [crosstalk 00:25:30], "Oh, I will cut someone. You hurt my child, it's game over." And, [crosstalk 00:25:37] I am not a physical, violent person-
Sheila Bella:
I will die trying to beat you up because I can't. I don't know Jujitsu.
Amanda Rose:
That's right. And, I'm not a violent person at all but when it comes to your children ... I like that you draw that parallel because of course this business is my baby. And as you know, having your ... What do I tell people a lot of times? Being an entrepreneur, especially when you have a business, when you have people your responsible for, it's like having triplets with colic. It's not like just having one newborn. It's not one newborn. It's a fleet of newborns and they all need your attention.
Sheila Bella:
You care about your team so much. Yeah, you do feel like a mother, I suppose. But, you take responsibility for their wellbeing so yeah, you will do some crazy shit.
Amanda Rose:
That's right.
Sheila Bella:
Yeah.
Amanda Rose:
I also feel like at the beginning of who I was in Microblade Canada, I was definitely somebody who was not vibrating or operating at the level that I feel now, where I feel happy and hopeful and very open to conversations. And, I even welcome conflict now. Or, not conflict but I welcome those stickier conversations because I know where the true magic is so I don't shy away from that. I feel like that is a huge where I have grown is that-
Sheila Bella:
How free. That's freedom. Freedom.
Amanda Rose:
Yeah, and again, I just want to give you guys a little bit of a glimpse into a very precious part of my transformation with Sheila specifically was talking about how I had felt wronged and harmed by certain people in the industry, and Sheila's advice as my coach, she's like, "Well, what are you going to do about it?" Instantly, I'm like, "Why should I do anything about it? These people hurt me." Sheila's like, "Well, I think that this is an opportunity for you. Let's assume that if you don't do something, nobody's going to do anything so what do you want to do about it?"
I sat with that discomfort and I sat in that resistance and I sat in that "Why should I be the first person?" Then, I realized what a gift that was for me to be able to step into. And as you said, you're like, "That's a power move, Amanda. You're stepping into your power."
Sheila Bella:
It is a power move.
Amanda Rose:
Yeah.
Sheila Bella:
Apologizing, I think, is the most badass thing you can do. Being humble is the bravest thing you can do.
Amanda Rose:
Amen, sister.
Sheila Bella:
Putting your guard down is the bravest thing you can do. I side with that girl any day. Any day. I want her on my team any day. I want to sit with her. I'm sorry, I'm going on a rant right now.
Amanda Rose:
I love it.
Sheila Bella:
The people who have their walls up, who are just above apologizing, above being vulnerable, above accepting any responsibility, even just a little bit, any responsibility, those are not my people. They're not, and the thing is real recognize real. How they take it is how they take it. That is not your responsibility.
Amanda Rose:
That's right.
Sheila Bella:
They have some ish that they need to work out on their own, but yeah, I'm just not above apologizing, especially as the AAM president, I'm going to mess things up. I know I will but I'm not going to try to, but it's such a big responsibility but all I can tell you is that I am not apologizing. I am not above recalibrating my decisions and re-tweaking things. No one's perfect. The only thing you can be is flexible and have grace with yourself. That's it.
Amanda Rose:
And also recognize the gifts of the people in your circle, who hold your ass accountable. That is such a huge gift, especially in terms of our relationship. It's like you call me on my stuff. You make me wickedly uncomfortable. I sit in resistance. I have a little temper tantrum and then I'm like, "You know what? Sheila's right." And what was really also healing for me ... So, let's talk about the healing that happens with us, when we do step into that opportunity because for me, I had to sit with it and I had to think mindfully about the contributions, the negative contributions I had made to that relationship and those specific points in time where I showed up in a way that I was not proud of.
And, I was able to name those times, and I felt like that was powerful in the messages that I sent to those specific people because they knew that I had put thought into it and that this was very intentional. And again, as you know and one thing that I will recommend to people, if you are considering reaching out to somebody, don't send an email. Don't send a text message. I know that I do not translate well on email. I translate best in video, best in person actually. I'm at my best in person, so I actually recorded videos so that people could see me and hear me and hopefully get an idea of my energy and my sincerity.
Yeah, and it was hard and I was sweating. Then, you play the fear through and you're like, "How is this going to be received?" But, you're absolutely right. The intention and the intentional action I took was what was the most important part.
Sheila Bella:
Yeah, that's it. It's for you. It's not for them. It's for you. Oh my gosh, I'm so proud of you. I can't even.
Amanda Rose:
Thanks, friend. I'm not even sure, and I'm totally honest about that ... So, that all happened for me in February, so Sheila and I were at a conference together in the end of January. It was a wonderful conference but for me personally, there was weird shifts happening, I think at that time. There was a lot internally going on. There was a crazy full moon out. It was a weird time. But after I did those videos and I healed that for myself, I don't know if I had gone through that process, if I would have been able to even show up for the Instagram Lives early in March with a whole heart.
Sheila Bella:
Oh my gosh.
Amanda Rose:
Because by that point, I was just like, "I've done the work. I feel good about this and now I want to step in." The whole point of all of that was to make people feel less alone with their fears, and also just share stories, because holding and sharing and witnessing stories can really heal people. Even if they're only participating, even if they're only witnessing and they're not at the point where they want to share themselves, stories have so much power and they have the power to bind us together, and I feel like it's been just awesome for me this year.
And at the same time, scary. Make no mistake, March, April, May, going into June, those were some pretty dark months for us.
Sheila Bella:
Scary times.
Amanda Rose:
Yeah, but we're here and I'm grateful for it.
Sheila Bella:
I think this industry has gotten so much closer through COVID. We just all connect through the power of social media, which I feel like people shit on social media so much but I have made some amazing friends through this free platform that we're using right now.
Sheila Bella:
I know this episode is just getting to the good part, but hold on a second. I wanted to stop and ask you if you ever feel like a brow or lash robot? Okay, I have another question for you. It's a two-part question. What is an old superpower that you have, and then a new superpower that you've discovered this year?
Amanda Rose:
Ooh. So I would say the superpower that I've always had, honestly since I probably came out of my mother's womb, was the ability to connect with people. I guess a fearlessness around asking questions and reaching out. I've never had a fear of really reaching out to people. Even if they didn't respond, or responded negatively, I'm like, "What's the worst I can get? No?" So in that respect, I feel like my willingness to step into conversations is something that is strong in me. How that has been enhanced and almost morphed into I think a greater superpower this year is the humility and the grace that I know that is a part of me.
So when I do reach out to connect, it comes from a deeper more mindful place now and it's not as surface level and 9 times out of 10 it has nothing to do with business. It's just about wanting to personally connect with somebody. I just want to say, because I feel like this needs to be said, I do get a lot of inquiries through our DMs about working with Pretty Rich Bosses and working with you, and people, they're like, "Is Sheila the real deal because sometimes I see her on social media and I just don't know?"
Sheila Bella:
If I'm real. I know, I get that a lot and I understand.
Amanda Rose:
I can imagine, right? You and I have talked about this. You and I have talked about this and I just said, "She is the most real person that you will ever work with. What you see on social media is 100% who she is, and she is not apologizing for it, and I feel like if you're able to work with her, she's going to help you elevate yourself to the point where you're not apologizing either."

Mindfulness.

What I will say, and I have a sticky note on my monitor ... It keeps falling off because I use it all the time ... is I think passion is a superpower. I think passion and drive and creativity and all that is super magical and wonderful, but feelings are not facts and I often have in the past, pre-Sheila Bella, governed myself by my feelings. And again, like we talk about the momma bear instinct, this is my baby, this is my business.
Sheila Bella:
Facts don't care about your feelings.
Amanda Rose:
Facts don't care.
Sheila Bella:

Right? Right? So now for me, just being mindful when I do receive other negative feedback or if I'm in conflict with somebody, I sit there and I allow myself to ... The other thing is to not be so reactive and responsive right away. This is things that Katie and I both, we talk about building muscles. Building muscles of resilience, building muscles of grace. If you feel triggered or that you need to automatically respond to something, give yourself the grace of 10 seconds of breathing. These are practices that-
Sheila Bella:
That's it. Yeah, that could change everything.
Amanda Rose:
Literally changes everything, right? I think I'm cultivating a little bit more of a superpower just being much more mindful in how I'm responding to things. Also, I hold this-
Sheila Bella:
That's really good.
Amanda Rose:
I hold this very powerful belief in my head, and it's really transformed even how I talk to people every day is that everyone is showing up to do their absolute best. Everyone is always doing their best. That doesn't speak to where they might be in their life, you know what I mean? But, just going into any conversation or any situation with the true belief that that other person on the other end, that you may or may not be in conflict with, is absolutely trying their best just provides more empathy and softness to the conversation.
Sheila Bella:
Yeah, yeah. That's such a beautiful way to go about life. It's a choice.
Amanda Rose:
It feels good, too.
Sheila Bella:
It feels better. It feels better. It's a good strategy. I love that.
Amanda Rose:
The other thing is is superpower wise, I feel like my team is part of my superpower. I work with the most exceptional women, and I know you do, too, but it is true. How incredible is it to wake up every morning and be truly excited and joyful to go to work? Or, to just be at work? I've never enjoyed my environment, the people that I work ... We have friendships. We have close relationships. We care about each other. It's truly a family, and like Katie said, "I back your play, girlfriend." We have each other's backs and it extends far beyond the workplace.
I think truly caring about other people is priceless. It's invaluable and it makes us human beings. That's what makes human beings special is our ability to actually have compassion and have empathy and care about each other.
Sheila Bella:
Mm-hmm (affirmative). Yeah, you're one of the warmest people I know and I see ... Even when we did that conference in January, I saw you in conversation with people, and the attention, even your body language, the attention you pay to people, you look them in the eye like they're the only person in the room. You're so intentional with that.

Tell us about that. Did you know what you were intentionally doing, or was it just a byproduct of your natural inclination to serve and to get to know people in the industry and listen to what they want?
Amanda Rose:
You know what? Can I do a take two of my superpower because I actually feel like maybe that's ...
Sheila Bella:
Sure.
Amanda Rose:
Who I am as a person, and who I've always been in my life, in business, I have always been about the relationship. No matter what the situation, so it's just inherent to how I operate. When I used to be a permanent makeup artist, and guys, I have been honest about this my entire life, I was mediocre. I was okay. I didn't do the best work. I didn't do the worst work, but I was fully friggen booked without advertising and it was because of how I treated my clients. Every single time, they knew they had 100% of my attention. I was always available to help them and support them. I literally ran my business on 96% referral basis. Referrals were huge for me, and it was because I saw the people that were lying on my tables. I knew who their kids were. I knew what jobs they did. I asked them about their vacations.
Often times, I would remember this inherently but I always had a system where I would make little notes for myself so that I could remember these things, and these are the things that inspire people to support your business. These are the things that you can do to get people advertising for you without even really asking them to.
Sheila Bella:
Selling without selling.
Amanda Rose:
That's right. And again, at the AAM presentation I did a couple weeks ago, it really is about the power of the inspired client, and it has to come from the heart, though. People can tell. Everybody's walked into a store, you put on a dress, you know it looks like garbage on you. You walk out and you ask the sales lady, "How's this look on me?" "Oh, it looks great. You should buy two of them."
Thank you for your insincerity. I know I look like a dumpster fire right now. I'm walking out the door because that person is focused on the transaction. Even when I was in retail sales, I would always give people my honesty. I would do it with kindness and professionalism but I would always be like, "You know what? Why don't I pull something else in a different cut that might flatter your body shape more often." Because I knew that the last thing I wanted to do was sell somebody something that they were not going to feel good in because they would remember it and they would never trust me again. It's about building trust, building credibility with people.
So, I feel like it's just part of who I am and part of how I operate. And that's why customer service is so important to us because we are focused on the relationship with our customers. We are focused on the relationship with our suppliers. A lot of the suppliers that we work with, I actually have personal friendship ... I know this is shocking to you, but a lot of them I call friends. A lot of them, we call each other and talk about life, and they are truly ... Anne Marie from PermaBlend is one of my dearest, closest friends. She has such a special, tender place in my heart.
I said to her, "I just feel grateful that we are selling PermaBlend because that brought you into my life." If that is the endgame of everything-
Sheila Bella:
Yeah I love her, too.
Amanda Rose:
... then I have so much gratitude for that. The other thing I find in terms of the relationship is it does push you sometimes to get through the discomfort of things that might come up. There was a moment, and you and I talked about this, much earlier this year when I could have either listened to Sheila with my whole heart and taken her advice and pushed through some pretty icky stuff, or I could have just tucked tail and run. This is the thing. There was things that I wanted to do for myself, but make no mistake, it was because I had committed to my relationship with Sheila and committed to the process of growth that I knew was on the other side of this for me.
So, that was a longer term view and I'm like, "This is temporary. We can do hard things. We can do hard things." Relationships are so important because nobody wants to feel alone. Think about the things we can accomplish together, and I would also rather show up in a collective or in a community than show up as a single person.
Sheila Bella:
Yeah, life is just more fun that way and more meaningful that way, in my opinion.
Amanda Rose:
It's juicy. It's magic.
Sheila Bella:
Yeah, I know. I struggle with this because I know some people who I respect and adore, and their take is that you can enjoy a beautiful sunset by yourself. It's fine. I'm not like that. It's so much better with someone else, right?
Amanda Rose:
I would be sitting at that sunset Face Timing my friends.
Sheila Bella:
Like, "Come on, come on, come on."
Amanda Rose:
I don't even know, I know you have siblings, but I'm an only child so I feel also maybe part of my story is that I've always craved those sibling relationships and those friendships.
Sheila Bella:
Yes. This is where we connect. I have siblings, but not really.
Amanda Rose:
Yeah, you guys are quite far distanced in age and stuff like that, right?
Sheila Bella:
Yeah. I don't know if you know this but my dad actually has five kids from his first marriage. It's so controversial. Anyways, it's so juicy. He was a businessman in his 30s and then he met this hot 19 year old dancer in a hotel, and then made her his girlfriend, got her an apartment in [Kubal 00:49:03] and kept that relationship for seven years, and then he maintained his wife and his five kids with his first wife, and then he also had a girlfriend at the same time, and then knocked her up after seven years and I was the baby. Then, he left that family to be with my mom and gave her breast implants.
Amanda Rose:
Oh my God. Okay, so first of all just logistically, I would like to know how he found the time to do all of that-
Sheila Bella:
I don't know. I don't know.
Amanda Rose:
Wow.
Sheila Bella:
That's why when I was three years old, I was introduced to my brothers and sisters. How do you think those kids felt about me? And I was three ... Hi, Nita.
Amanda Rose:
Hi, Nita.
Sheila Bella:
I was three, and then I was like, "Oh my gosh, it's Christmas. I have brothers and sisters." I was so lonely. Then, come to find out slowly years later that I wasn't really accepted so I have that same wound. I have that same only childish wound where it's like, "Love me, love me, love me, love me." Right? "Accept me, accept-
Amanda Rose:
Why don't you love me?
Sheila Bella:
Why aren't they accepting me? Mom, I don't get it. Why? I didn't have any idea.
Amanda Rose:
One of the most pivotal parts of our relationship or our conversation, and I'll never forget this, when you were in New Jersey last year-
Sheila Bella:
Yeah, I was at the gym.
Amanda Rose:
We refer back to this conversation a lot, right?
Sheila Bella:
We do.
Amanda Rose:
Sheila was at that time just taking on leadership of the AAM-
Sheila Bella:
Secretly.
Amanda Rose:
Secretly. Nobody could talk about it, and it was the first, I feel, really real conversation we had, and at that particular juncture, I think I had just gone through conflict with a competitor. There's just an ongoing narrative there, and I was at a very, very low point and I was not sitting in a place of trust, and I don't know if I was rude but I wasn't kind. I was scared, and I was-
Sheila Bella:
You were scared. I saw through it.
Amanda Rose:
I was so scared to trust you. I was so scared to trust you. I was scared to trust anyone. It wasn't you. It wasn't you, because at that time, my perception was that you were part of another crowd, of a bunch of people who didn't like me.
Sheila Bella:
Us versus them type thing.
Amanda Rose:
Yes, yes, very much so. And again, look at us now. Guys, if you don't know this, if I don't talk to Sheila for a week, I send her a voice message just because I miss her. We are actually friends outside of this industry-
Sheila Bella:
We're actually friends. The trust is there and it's real. It's real.
Amanda Rose:
Jennifer, I just saw something that came up on the feed and she said, "How hard is it to trust people?" Here's what I'm going to suggest is number one, as women, we have to be mindful and aware and allow for space to listen to our intuition. Stop listening to the narratives you created for yourself. Stop listening to other friggen people, who all by the way have their own agendas, own experiences. I would always recommend step into a place of trust and openness because what do you have to lose, especially if you're at a place where you're feeling isolated, you're feeling lonely, you don't feel like you have those supportive relationships in your life.
Guess what? You're already at the bottom. You're there, so why not be brave, step into something and I'm telling you right now, if I hadn't stepped through that ... And I mean, Shelia did make it ... I feel like you made it easier for me because you called it, you were like, "I hear your fears. I see them. I understand them. Just I'm going to tell you exactly who I am and we are going to figure out if there is value there for both of us." That was that conversation. There was a point where Sheila was like, "I don't know if I want to work with you." And, I'm like ... In that moment, I was like, "Oh, because of all the things you've heard about me."
But, it was literally Sheila going, "No. You have some work to do if you want to work with me." So-
Sheila Bella:
It was your willingness. It was your willingness in the beginning. I was like, "I don't know if you're willing because it's the uncomfortable shit."
Amanda Rose:
Yes, the willingness. Willingness is key to everything, I think.
Sheila Bella:
Absolutely.
Amanda Rose:
It's the willingness to put down your sword and stop fighting with people. It's the willingness to forgive people. It's the willingness to forgive yourself, and the willingness to just be brave and do things that make you wickedly friggen uncomfortable. Everybody here is, "Oh yeah, all of the magic happens outside the comfort zone." There is a reason that's a saying. There's a reason there's a million memes about it because it's 100% true. You don't be brave, you get ... I'm not saying you get nowhere but I'm going to suggest that you get nowhere big and juicy without some bravery and without trusting people.

Here's the thing, guys. 2020 has been a hard year, but if I'm honest, it has really been a wonderful year for me personally in my growth, in my friendship, in the depths of the relationships that I have, in the fact that I go to bed every day feeling like I am showing up as a better version of myself. I'm showing up with sincere generosity and caring of the people around me. And, I'm not perfect every day. I have bad days. We've had a week around here. It's been a week around here.

But there's something to be said about just waking up and feeling like you're doing good, and focusing on the things you can control because things in this world are not highly controllable.
