I'm sorry, but it's true! Artists are getting into the PMU beauty business and they're being lied to. They have all of these ideas of what their business is going to be like, what becoming a boss is going to be like, how they're going to be successful, the skillset they need to be successful, and so much more. They're starting off with a rocky foundation and it's not fair to them.
So in this episode, me and my good friend and PMU veteran Tina Davies are going to EXPOSE the industry for all of its lies. That's right, we're laying it all out on the table. Not only are we going to share the biggest lies the PMU Industry tells you but we're ALSO going to share the truths that will set you and your beauty business free.
Are you ready for that, beauty bosses? Let's get into it.
Here are the episode highlights:
‣‣ [04:36] We start, as usual, with our get-to-know-you questions!
‣‣ [07:50] Before we dive into our lies of the beauty industry, Tina and I talk briefly about her greatest accomplishment, bringing I Love Ink into the beauty world. It's seriously been game-changing for me in my business.
‣‣ [15:46] Now we dig into our lies the beauty industry tells you, starting with: tattooing is just a procedure.
‣‣ [18:32] Our second lie is this misconception that once you're the boss it means that you can just go home and relax whenever you want and live your business in the hands of "your people". Um...no.
‣‣ [21:02] Third lie: that permanent makeup is SO popular that the moment you get that certification that you're good to go and girls will just be walking in your door. Sorry, honey. You've still got to put in the work!
‣‣ [23:40] The fourth lie is that balancing your work and family life is EASY. Spoiler alert: it totally isn't. And on top of that, the right balance for you might not even be 50/50.
‣‣ [27:33] The fifth lie that the beauty industry, namely the permanent makeup industry, tells you is that all you need to do is be good at sketching on paper and then you'll be bomb at brows or lips. Oh my gosh.
‣‣ [30:01] Number six is the idea that firing people (or even hiring people) is just fun. Like, it's just fun to have that power. No, mama, it's stressful and it's hard.
‣‣ [34:15] Number seven, a lot of artists just starting out think that once you master the basics then you're done and maybe that's how it's sold to you! But the basics are just the foundation of your artistry.
‣‣ [39:24] Lie number eight: once you're the boss everyone will like you and you'll be super popular. Hm...no.
‣‣ [43:42] And finally, our last lie, is that the best tattooing skill wins. I know we all want to master our skills and when we feel like when we reach that level of mastery then we'll just be the best and all of the clients will come running through our door and we'll never have to think about marketing or pitching ourselves to actually bring in clients. It's just...not realistic.
‣‣ [48:15] It doesn't end there, though! Listen here to get even more exclusive, juicy insight for beauty businesses as Tina and I answer YOUR questions in a live Q&A!
